Since Feb. 12, when the Winter Olympics kicked off, I have not been able to keep my eyes off the TV. Although the only event that I really enjoy is snowboarding, I still find myself cheering for Americans in such events as any alpine skiing, speed skating and surprisingly figure skating. I do not care which event is on. All I care about is the chance to witness an American athlete win a medal. I still cannot forget how snowboarder Sean White wrapped the American flag around his neck after winning his second gold medal. When I sit down to watch the Winter Olympics, I watch with confidence that we will dominate, not just because we have over 200 Olympians, but because our team name is ‘USA.’ I am sure that the American athletes have the same attitude. On Feb. 17, NBC showed a clip of American soldiers watching the winter Olympics from their breakfast table in Afghanistan. I can only imagine the pride that these soldiers feel as they serve their country and watch talented athletes represent America at the same time. Just as I look forward to football season every year, I now more than ever look forward to the Olympics because of the popularity athletes like Michael Phelps and White have brought to the games. Both the Summer and Winter Olympics are worth waiting for to experience the American pride.
