This year senior students have the chance to accumulate community service hours to obtain free after prom tickets.

According to Volunteer Coordinator, Dana Navarro, The White Oak Gives Back local fundraising organization is willing to pay $20,000 to TAP for students who volunteer.

“So far 57 students have turned in hours towards their free tickets,” Navarro said. “TAP just received their first check from White Oak Gives Back for $1,890.”

There is a minimum of eight community service hours required per senior.

I am going to volunteer at an animal shelter on Feb. 13,” senior Ariel Shepard said. “I plan to help with adoption, and I will be there for around five hours.”

According to senior Michael Stewart, finding the time to volunteer on a Saturday is what is stopping him from participating.

“I originally signed up, but they called me and cancelled,” Stewart said. “Now I am just trying to find a free Saturday where I would be able to get some volunteer hours in.”

Senior Jennifer Montalvo said she is not positive if she is going to attend TAP this year.

“I went last year, and it was at the school, which made it very convenient,” Montalvo said. “But this year it is at Dave & Buster’s, and we would have to ride a bus over there. It will not be the same as last year.”

Senior Garrett Tallerine said he is not only looking forward to receiving free after prom tickets, but also expects the volunteer hours to look good on his college application.

“I have not done a lot of volunteering hours during high school,” Tallerine said. “I am hoping these hours will help me with my college application.”

According to White Oak Gives Back, the community service hours must be performed at approved locations. The goal is to help the Greater-Houston Area.
